How the conversion works
Before noon the hour is the same — you only pad it to four digits, so 9:00 AM is 0900. From 1:00 PM onwards you add 12 to the hour, so 3:00 PM is 1500. Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200.
Minutes never change. Whatever the minutes are in one format, they are the same in the other: 6:45 PM is 1845.
Answers
Frequently asked questions
What time is 1500 in military time?
1500 is 3:00 PM. For any military time from 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hour: 15 − 12 = 3, so 1500 reads as 3:00 PM.
How do I convert PM times to military time?
Add 12 to the hour and drop the AM/PM. 3:00 PM becomes 15:00, written 1500. The one exception is noon: 12:00 PM is already 1200, so nothing is added.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both name the same moment. 0000 starts a new day and is the form most schedules use; 2400 marks midnight at the end of the day it closes. A shift ending at midnight ends at 2400, and the next shift starts at 0000.
Do the minutes change in military time?
No. Minutes are identical in both systems — 3:27 PM is 1527. Only the hour changes, which is why this chart only needs to list the hours.
How do you say military time out loud?
On the hour reads as hundreds: 0900 is “zero nine hundred”, 1500 is “fifteen hundred”. With minutes you read both pairs — 1545 is “fifteen forty-five”. Adding “hours” at the end is common but optional.
Is military time the same as 24-hour time?
It is the same clock. The difference is style: 24-hour civilian time is usually written with a colon (15:45), while military style drops the colon and keeps the leading zero (1545).
